Unlocking Your Leadership Style: Powerful Goddess Archetypes in Business

By Jane McCarthy

The ancient wisdom “know thyself” remains a powerful principle for leadership development. In today’s business landscape, there’s a growing recognition that effective leadership comes in many forms, each with its own unique strengths and gifts.

One compelling framework for understanding your natural leadership style comes from Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen’s seminal work “Goddesses in Everywoman.” In it, Bolen illuminates the ancient feminine archetypes alive in women’s psyches today. After studying Bolen’s work in tandem with archetypal systems such as the Enneagram and the Tarot, I’ve adapted Bolen’s goddess archetypes specifically for the business context, offering a fresh lens through which to view individuals’ innate leadership gifts.

Understanding your core goddess archetype can be transformative in recognizing and embracing your natural strengths as a leader. It can help you focus your energy where you’ll be most effective. Each archetype brings distinct qualities that contribute powerfully to business success:

  • Hera: The Relationship Cultivator naturally excels at building and maintaining deep connections. If this is your core energy, you have an innate gift for fostering trust within teams and with clients. You notice people’s unique contributions and know exactly how to acknowledge them meaningfully. Your handwritten notes and thoughtful gestures create lasting bonds, and your professional network becomes an incredible source of strength and opportunity. Your capacity to foster genuine connections is invaluable.
  • Athena: The Strategic Planner brings the gift of thorough preparation and strategic thinking. If this resonates as your primary energy, you excel at developing not just Plan A, but anticipating and preparing for multiple scenarios. Your ability to think several steps ahead helps your team navigate challenges with confidence. You find fulfillment in creating robust strategies and contingency plans that ensure your organization’s resilience.
  • Diana: The Courageous Innovator possesses natural enthusiasm for exploring uncharted territory. If this is your core energy, you have an innate ability to spot emerging trends and inspire others to break new ground. You’re often the first to identify shifting market dynamics and develop innovative ways to harness change. Your pioneering spirit makes you especially valuable in industries experiencing rapid transformation.
  • Venus: The Creative Catalyst brings an inherent ability to inspire others to design things of impact and beauty. You encourage team members to be vulnerable in expressing themselves creatively and to take chances on creative solutions.  You have a special talent for infusing stuck situations with fresh energy and the kind of joyful play that can lead to a breakthrough.
  • Demeter: The Nurturing Guide creates an environment of safety where people can grow and thrive. If this is your core energy, you’re naturally skilled at fostering a sense of security within your team. Like a protective mother bear, you create an environment where people feel safe enough to take risks and stretch beyond their comfort zones. Your nurturing leadership style promotes both personal growth and ultimately, maximizes the contributions of everyone on your team.
  • Maiden Persephone: The Optimistic Visionary brings boundless positivity and the ability to see possibilities where others see obstacles. If this represents your primary energy, your optimism combined with practical determination creates powerful momentum. You excel at blue sky brainstorming that can inspire a sense of renewal and fresh enthusiasm in everyone around you. You’re great at worldbuilding. Once people have the chance to step into your vision, they’re then better able to help you make your dream a reality.
  • Queen Persephone: The Bold Contrarian has an attitude that challenges conventional wisdom and offers a fresh perspective. If this is your core energy, you naturally see alternatives to the status quo and aren’t afraid to voice them. Your ability to constructively challenge groupthink can lead to new approaches that ‘zag’ where others in the market ‘zig’. Confronting what might have previously been considered taboo can unleash a revelatory power that galvanizes people.
  • Hestia: The Centered Sage maintains calm and clarity amidst chaos. If this represents your primary energy, you have mastered the art of the “sacred pause” – responding thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. Your presence brings peace to high-pressure situations and helps maintain a grounded perspective in turbulent times. You’re excellent at creating methodical processes that keeps the organization humming and ensures quality output.

While understanding your core goddess archetype is empowering, nimble leadership encompasses aspects of all these archetypal energies. Just as a skilled musician knows when to play loudly or softly, an effective leader learns to flex between different leadership energies as situations require. For instance, if you’re naturally strong in Maiden Persephone’s visionary energy, you might consciously develop some of Athena’s strategic thinking to ensure your vision is grounded in realistic, step-by-step planning (this archetypal balancing is very relevant to me personally!)

By understanding your natural goddess archetype and consciously developing aspects of others, you create a more complete leadership toolkit. This self-awareness and flexibility enable you to lead authentically while also adapting to what the moment calls for.
